Erika Fox

Erika Fox, née October 3, 1936 in Vienna as Erika / Sarah Esther Roth, composer. Grand-daughter of Chassidic Rabbi Shalom Hager. 1939 with mother and grandfather in exile in Great Britain. Obtained a scholarship for the Royal College of Music London, piano (Angus Morrison) studies and composition (Bernard Stevens); later on piano and music teacher (A.R.C.M.), piano accompanist in London, mother of two children. 1967 again composition studies at Morley College with Jeremy Dale Roberts, further studies with Harrison Birtwistle and Peter Maxwell Davies, courses at Dartington Summer School. Style of composition influenced by serial technique and the echo of Jewish sacred music. 1983 Gerald Finzi Award for ‘Kaleidoscope’ (premiered at Wigmore Hall, London), ‘Visiting Composer and Teacher’ University of Auckland, New Zealand, 1990 participation in ‘Europeras’ with John Cage (Almeida Festival).
